CALIFORNIA ART CLUB UNVEILS WORK OF THE STATE'S TOP ARTISTS
AT GALA OPENING RECEPTION FOR ANNUAL GOLD MEDAL JURIED EXHIBITION

With 148 Paintings and 22 Sculptures from 152 Traditional Contemporary Artists,
Event is One of the Largest and Most Prestigious Juried Art Events in the Country

PASADENA, Calif. (October 11, 2003) - The California Art Club, one of the largest, oldest and most active fine arts organizations in the United States, unveiled new original artwork from 152 of the club's artist members Saturday evening at the Artists' Gala Reception for the 93rd Annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibition at the Pasadena Museum of California Art.
This extensive annual exhibition has gained the reputation of being one of the most prestigious in the United States, featuring the highest quality of traditional fine art paintings and sculptures. More than 400 were in attendance for the gala opening, which attracted art collectors from the around the country.
The exhibition opens to the public on Sunday, October 12, 2003, and will continue through Sunday, November 2, 2003. During the three-week exhibition, participating artists will conduct demonstrations on the fine arts of sculpting and painting.
"The Gold Medal Exhibition has no theme, similar to those of 19th Century European art salons, in order to encourage artists to take artistic risks and create what they consider to be their most important works," said Peter Adams, artist and president of the California Art Club.
According to Adams, a diverse panel of 11 art experts selected the 170 works of art for inclusion in the exhibition. The club's artists, including a handful of renowned out-of-state members, submitted nearly 600 pieces for consideration.
All of the works in this juried exhibition are available for sale, and many are featured in the 176-page full-color exhibition catalogue that documents the careers of the participating artists. The catalogue, available through the museum for $45.00, features an essay by Dr. Albert Boime of the U.C.L.A. Department of Art History on "California Orientalism," a subject that has never before been published.
During the evening, the exhibiting artists casted votes for their peers whose art represented the "Best of Show." Two Gold Medals were awarded, one in the category of painting, the other for sculpture. Joining Adams for the presentation of the Gold Medals were Donald Hildreth, chair for the Gold Medal Exhibition, and Wesley Jessup, the museum's executive director.
Consistent with the club's mission to educate the public on the merits of traditional fine art, artists will lead two demonstrations in conjunction with the Gold Medal Exhibition. On Saturday, October 18, Glen Eisner will present the principles of sculpting, and on Saturday, November 1, Sunny Apinchapong-Yang will discuss portraiture. Both demonstrations will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and require an additional ticket that costs $10.00 per event. Tickets are available through the museum.
The Pasadena Museum of California Art is located at 490 E. Union St. in Pasadena, Calif. Its hours of operation are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, with extended evening hours on Friday until 8 p.m. The telephone number is 626-568-3665.
